I’m currently chipping away at Mario Kart, but that’s pretty damn when you have GTAIV distracting you…
But the video is just an attempt at beating Lou in Guitar Hero 3. Granted, it’s not my best attempt (I can get to about the third or fourth solo), but I still lose in the end. Oh, the humiliation!
Being the hip little 17-year-old that I am, I decided to go out and pick up Mario Kart Wii today (on launch) and push through the pain that is unlocking all of the tracks, characters and karts (now with bikes). Jesus. Maybe it’s the fact that I loathe any Mario Kart race at 50CC, or maybe it’s because I tried using that damn plastic wheel that came with it. Either way; this Mario Kart left a funny taste in my mouth.
Now, this here is more of an impressions that a formal review. I’ve only played a few hours of MKWii, so I can’t go all out and say I have a final opinion. That said, I feel that I can still say with confidence that MKWii just makes the Kart series look like its on its last lap (pun).

Graphics looked almost as good as the above screenshot.
I played through all 32 tracks today, and a majority of them felt like tracks from either Double Dash or MKDS with a new paintjob and played through a mirror. The first few courses were fine; bouncing around on mushrooms and the like were things I can’t say I’ve done in a MK game before, and if the entire game were like that, there’d be no complaints. But nope, not even Rainbow Road stuck out at all, aside from being about as bright and colorful as Perez Hilton’s hair.
On the note of color, the graphics in MKWii just…well, they just weren’t up to par. Did they look bad? Not really. I noticed quite a number of jagged edges, which is my only graphical complaint in terms of problems, but the game itself just looks exactly like Double Dash. Yes, I understand the Wii isn’t a graphical powerhouse, but damn, can’t we at least run 60 fps when it splits into four screens?
Online is probably the best part about the game. It’s much easier than Nintendo’s previous attempts at online, and is (thankfully) very much lag-free, unlike Brawl, which is practically unplayable. There’s a scoring system to go along with it, which adds or subtracts points from your overall total. I’m really looking forward to diving deeper into the online section.
I’ll probably have a (video?) review up within a few days. Now, it’s off to the ol’ bed machine.
P.S. That damn wheel makes your arms hurt. Gamecube controller > wheel.
I’ve never really had much faith in medicine. I’ve always tried to tough things out, ’cause I figure, hell, the headache will simply go away, right? No need to pop a pill every time somethings not perfect. On a similar note of health, today was the first time I had been sick in a while. I’d say I’m rarely sick, probably due to my ridiculous pride.
I’ve also never enjoyed sleeping in too late. I can see a few hours, but past noon is just a waste of time in my opinion. But today, for the first time (aside from a few water and bathroom breaks), I basically slept until about four. Granted, I felt like shit the entire time, so I wasn’t exactly asleep, more like basking in my misery while trying to fall asleep, but hey, who says that isn’t sleep?
But then I got up, took some medicine, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t feel better in about an hour. Just like that. Damn you medicine and your ability to work. I still don’t believe in you.
Also, fuck school. If I miss one god damn day, it shouldn’t fuck me up for the rest of the entire fucking year.
Let me go off on a little bit of a geeky rant for a minute here.
I play a lot of video games, and when I play these games, I either go for one of two approaches when trying to beat a game;
- as fast as I can
- as high of a completion % as possible
Now I realize that the latter means that I actually get more for my money, but at the same time, I like having a respectable time for game completion, especially since for many, speed-running a game is just as impressive as beating the game 100%.
But at the same time, going through a game relatively fast is generally a by-product of the game’s saving feature including a “Tim Played” clock. For some reason, whenever that clock pops up, I panic. I know it’s not a race, but I still feel this need to rush through whatever I’m doing. It’s about the same as rewarding points for completing a puzzle or a level; if you don’t get a large amount of points or a good grade, you almost feel stupid for not being able to perform well.
This may be a key reason as to why I don’t play J-RPG’s that often; they always have that damn clock. Instead of taking my time and leveling, I just push through, level by level, until I finish the game. If I die somewhere or have to retry something, I know that clock is just getting higher, and for some reason, it frustrates me.
